Tokyo, Japan, 2025
When I was in Japan, I sometimes found myself walking on the wrong side of the path.
Being right could mean being wrong — risking a collision with others.
I must have unknowingly broken countless small rules and customs.
To keep public spaces clean and orderly, the Japanese are trained from a young age to follow rules with quiet precision.
In this image, everyone walks along the knife-shaped stripes of light cast by the transparent roof above.
Most stay to one side; only one person walks the other.
It might be randomness — or perhaps a glimpse into the workings of the collective subconscious.
